Youth Spirit Artworks unveiled our new 70 ft. by 2 story South Berkeley mural on the theme of "Health through Music" titled "Music on our Minds" the west side of the Bay Records building.

Youth Spirit Artworks is accepting applications for our Fall/Winter Jobs Training Program for young people, ages 16-25. The fall/winter program starts November 1 and runs through January 29th. Participants attend 2 days per week after school from 3pm to 6pm and every other week one additional day after school. They receive a training stipend for their participation, with exciting potential for advancement on YSA's progression ladder.

Applications downloaded from our web site can be turned in via email or at our office between now and Oct. 29 or/and until all spaces are full.

Youth Spirit is located at: 1769 Alcatraz Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94703, near the corner of Adeline and Alcatraz in S. Berkeley, 3 blocks from Ashby BART.

Saturday October 17th from noon to 1:30pm.

Location: Corner of Alcatraz Ave. and Ellis Street, S. Berkeley--on the west side of the Bay Records building at 1741 Alcatraz Avenue--just a few doors west of the NW corner of Adeline and Alcatraz Avenue in S. Berkeley, 3 blocks south of Ashby BART.

The event will feature FREE food, drinks, prayers, speakers and live music!!!!

Speakers include: Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, Council Member Max Anderson, Sr. artist Edythe Boone and youth artists.

YSA 2009 Auction - August 23rd

Join YSA youth artists, our board and staff and extended community on Sunday August 23rd -1pm to7pm -for a Silent Auction of our youth-made art chairs. YSA's auction is part of Oaklandish's 4th Annual FREE Radio Regatta at the Lake Merritt Boathouse, located at 568 Bellevue Avenue, Oakland.

The Regatta will feature micro-radio DJ's, free and semi-free boat rides, wonderful food, and much more.

Oakland Airport February Art Exhibit Features Youth Spirit Artists

Youth Spirit is delighted to be participating in an art exhibit at the Oakland Airport between February 14th and April 3, 2009. Twelve youth tables and chairs will be featured in the show, including work by artists Ryan McAllister, Shanice Kiel, Precious Gordon, Josh Katz, Candace Waltz, and Deja Tolerson. YSA furniture will be located in the walkway between Terminals 1 & 2. The exhibit honors well-known Oakland arts non-profit, Oaklandish, which awarded Youth Spirit with a 2008 Innovators Award as one of the most exciting new East Bay arts organizations last year. We are grateful to Oaklandish and to Carin Adams, Curator for their wonderful support for our art making.

New YSA Studio Opens in Berkeley

Monday December 15th Youth Spirit opens our new YOUTH ART STUDIO and RETAIL VENUE at: 1769 Alcatraz Avenue. The YSA Studio will be open Monday through Friday 3pm to 6pm and by appointment for purchasing work by calling: 510-282-0396.

Friday January 23rd from 4pm to 7:30pm Youth Spirit Artworks will hold the Grand Opening celebration for our new Art Studio located at 1769 Alcatraz Avenue in S. Berkeley near the corner of Adeline Street. Join us as we commemorate this exciting and joyful occasion. Food and beverages will be on hand. A youth-led program will be held from 5pm to 5:30pm. There will also be the opportunity to paint tiles on the topic of health that will be mounted on traffic turn-a-rounds in S. Berkeley next Spring!!!

YSA Participates in Annual KPFA Holiday Crafts Fair

Youth Spirit Artworks was a participant in the annual KPFA Holiday Crafts Fair December 13 and 14th from 10am to 6pm at Concourse Exhibition Center, 8th and Brannon Street in San Francisco.

Seven YSA artists helped in selling youth art chairs at the event. YSA youth artists gained valuable experience marketing their work. As usual, youth artists will receive 50% of the proceeds of everything YSA sold at the Crafts Fair.

YSA Executive Director Honored

On Friday December 6th our Executive Director Sally Hindman was honored at the New Way Media Festival Annual Dinner, receiving the Center for Art, Religion and Education "New Way Media 2008 Award for Caring Communications."

On Sunday August 17th, Youth Spirit Artworks held its first silent auction of 50+ art chairs created by over 25 youth participants in our 2007/08 program. The auction from Noon to 5pm was part of Oaklandish's 3rd Annual Radio Regatta at Lake Merritt Boat House in Lakeside Park, Oakland. Learn more about Oaklandish. Over 400 people attended the Regatta, enjoying boat rides, FM micro radio and wonderful food, in addition to participating in the silent auction.

More than 40 chairs were sold, a fantastic start to our organization's efforts beginning to sell our artists chairs.

A dozen Youth Spirit Artists volunteered at the event, giving boat rides to participants, as well as sharing with visitors about their art work. Additionally, YSA staff and board members were on hand throughout the day to help with auction festivities.

Youth Spirit is grateful to the staff of Oaklandish for their tremendous generosity and kindness in including us in the Radio Regatta. It was a truly wonderful, deeply Spirited day.
